Last week was my baby’s first birthday! I knew I wanted to have a fun party for him and all his little friends. The theme for the party was “under the sea,” because he absolutely loves visiting the local aquarium. I made all my own decorations for the party, except for some really cute balloons I got online. The star of the show was a DIY photo arch backdrop, which turned out so well. It was also pretty easy to make and super affordable.

Watch all three parts below to see how I built the arch, decorated it, and put it all together.
Supplies
- Insulation Foam Board (Home Depot USA)
- Insulation Foam Board (Home Depot Canada – this is the exact one I used)
- Utility Knife
Instructions
The foam board I bought was eight feet tall, which was a bit too big. I cut it down to seven feet tall, then I used a string tied around a marker to draw an arch at the top of the board. Using a utility knife, I cut out the arch.
The foam board is pretty thick, so I made small cuts, slowly working my way through the board to create the arch.
As you will see in the coming videos, I then created a decal for the backdrop using my Cricut and ironed it onto a large piece of fabric.
I attached the fabric to the foam board using hot glue, then added large brackets at the back to hold it up.
Once the arch was complete, I created my balloon garland, then added a dolphin balloon to the other side of the arch.
Let me know if you have any specific questions you want me to address in the upcoming tutorials, and stay tuned for more on how to build this DIY photo arch backdrop!

Andrea
Love this idea but wondering, Could you no see the letters from the insulation board through the fabric?
Great question! I forgot to mention I peeled off the green layer with all the words on it. One side is plain white and the other is silver.
Is it possible to paint the board and skip the fabric?
Sure, it just might take quite a few coats. I did fabric because it was a lot faster than painting.
Are you able to paint it instead of buy fabric?
You could! I just did fabric because it was a lot faster.
